After his impressive victory at the recent Japan Cup and now in top form as he aims for a fourth consecutive win at this monthâs FISE Montpellier, Yu Shojiâs signature frame is set to be released by FEC. We visited his home spot and had a casual, chat-like conversation focusing on his signature frame, as well as how he came to join IGI and the FEC team.

–First of all, how did it come about that you decided to make a signature frame?
Yu Shoji (Yu ) : Was it 2024? When Dub invited me to a competition in Montreal, Canada, he asked if I wanted to sign with the IGI and FEC teams. Of course Iâd already loved Dub for a long time, and Kasahara-san was around too, so IGI felt really close to me. I admired it as well. And you know that video with Kasahara-san, Dub, and Benjamin? I saw that and thought, âThatâs so sick,â and I wanted to do something like that too, so I did the Young Gun Tour with Ren and Ryuga. Iâve watched that video so many timesâI love it that much (laughs).
So I was like, âYes, please!â and got to join the team. At the time, I was riding a street frame, but I knew it didnât quite fit me. Street frame shapes look cool, but since theyâre for street, the size is a bit big, theyâre heavier, and if you get into details, things like the rear not being slammed.

–Back when you started, in flatland it felt like the shorter the frame, the betterâshort frames were mainstream. But now more people are using longer frames than back then. What do you think about top tube size?
Yu : Iâm not that tallâ163 cm(5’4″)âbut the WeThePeople Utopia had a 20â top tube and a 12.5 rear. It was fun in its own way at the time, but I felt like the bike was controlling me. Even when I watched my own riding on video, it felt like I was being controlled rather than controlling the bike. Do you get what I mean?
So for me, 19.5 isnât too small, itâs easy to handle, and the bikeâs movements look bigger and dynamic, so I like 19.5.

For front tricks like crack packer or cross footed tricks, there are specific foot placements and spaces you need, right?
But chainstay length probably affects things like whether the seat gets in the way or how much space you have to put your foot in.

–What about head angle? You mentioned before that 75 is goodâwhy?
Yu : Itâs kind of a feel thing, which isnât great to explain, but 75.5 felt really quick. Like halfpacker it was actually hard to do. Even mc circle-type tricks were harder, and when messing around with whiplash turbines I noticed it too. Also, the entry into my double front decade had a weird feel. I didnât like it muchâit didnât click for me. That was 75.5.
And 74.5 had the opposite issueâitâs more slack so itâs harder to get into rolling tricks. Getting into inside can be difficult. So yeah, itâs just a feeling thing.
Both have their pros and cons, but I felt like the downsides stood out more, so I settled in the middle at 75, and that felt the easiest to ride. Maybe itâs just what I got used toâbut I rode 75.5 and 74.5 good amount of time and still didnât get used to them, so I guess thatâs just how it is.

I used to ride at the spot in Matsudo for a long time, so there was a period when I rode with Yu every day. Heâs genuinely a fun rider to be around, not just for me but for anyoneâhe has this easygoing âSup?â kind of vibe. And then, at times, heâll suddenly land super sharp, powerful tricks and give that proud âSUP!?â kind of look. Watching JIMALOGâs âYu Shoji Welcome to FEC & IGIâ video again, I thought, âSUP really is the perfect name for his frame!â
Talking about specs is really interestingâpeople think and feel differently about them. A 0.5-inch difference, if the head angle changes by 0.5 degrees, how much does the tire position actually shift? Yet those 1 inch or even less than 1 inch really do change how the bike feels. I think head angles affect whether a bike feels quick or mellow. And in flatland, there are so many different positions that if you really go deep into it, the optimal size and angle change depending on the position or trick. So in the end, there are probably people like me whoâve become a bit indifferent to it all, thinking thereâs no point worrying too much.
Basically, I think itâs about centering things around the tricks that matter most to youâdialing in your setup, choosing parts, and considering everything to find a good balance. And BMX is still a bicycle, so style and aesthetics are important too. From actually getting to try riding it, I felt itâs a well-balanced frame that can handle a wide range of tricks. Including its stylish look, just as Yu says, it really is a perfectly balanced frame.
